 Anna’s Cafe
A big old house in a spacious compound provides an impressive setting for this popular place, a big hit with the Silom office crowd as well as young party-goers using it as a meeting point. Early evening is its peak hours and the interior, decorated with old photographs, is always abuzz with lively conversation.
Good food spanning the classic and the innovative is the reason people keep coming back. Any of the yum spicy salads is a good way to start, especially yum kana with fresh prawns, recommended as it combines the crunchiness of the fresh, green broccoli-like stems and the succulent sweetness of the prawns with the classic flavours of a good, authentic Thai spicy salad. Stir-fried calamari with salted-egg sauce is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, with the calamari sauteed till just right and topped with a sauce made with the yolk of salted eggs, giving the dish an intense flavour and colour. Another winner is kaeng som tangy soup with chunks of omelette cha-om leaves and deep-fried fish, particularly good with a plate or two of plain steamed rice. For an East-meets-West experience, try chuchee pla salmon, in which the grilled salmon is bathed in a creamy, mildly spicy sauce. Do save room for desserts, as it offers great baked treats. Extra-moist apple crumble, served piping hot, comes with custard sauce on the side. Lemon tart is a fluffy, meringue-like confection, marvellous with a scoop of ice cream
